Leveraging digital technology, research on traditional Chinese architecture has advanced to three-dimensional modeling. However, the architectural zhuangxiu (interior partition, encloseing and decoration) of Qing Dynasty structures is intricate and thoughtfully crafted. This study addresses the challenges in studying the ‘disappeared’ zhuangxiu of Yuanmingyuan’s palace buildings, where scarce drawings and Qing palace records complicate spatial restoration. A certain degree of incompatibility exists between current research methodologies supported by digital technology and the complexity of Qing zhuangxiu. This study advocates a shift from ‘drawings-centered’ to ‘space-centered’ research, utilizing digital modeling and information technology to develop a model-based spatial database. This approach transcends traditional restoration modeling, enabling extended research capabilities. Three case studies from Yuanmingyuan illustrate the practical applicability of this methodology.
