The increasing complexity of software projects and the dynamic nature of modern working environments mean that non-technical factors such as Social Debt (SD) are playing an increasingly important role. SD describes the hidden costs resulting from organisational or social challenges, such as inefficient communication or conflicts in teams. This study examines the awareness of SD in the German IT industry and evaluates existing prevention and management approaches. Based on 13 expert interviews, indicators, causes and measures to reduce SD are identified. Key findings include the importance of clear communication and decision-making processes, the role of leaders and the impact of team dynamics such as diversity and trust. The results show that SD presents not only challenges but also opportunities: By systematically integrating and raising awareness of SD, companies can improve both team performance and job satisfaction. The study provides empirical evidence to support future research and practical approaches to reducing SD.
