The aim of this study was to examine the level of awareness regarding smart meters in India, encompassing perspectives from consumers, energy and distribution companies, as well as society as a whole. In a comprehensive survey targeting educated individuals, the findings of a societal cost-benefit analysis revealed several positive outcomes. These included energy savings for consumers, decreased market costs due to enhanced transparency, and reduced expenses associated with managing complaints at energy suppliers. Interestingly, over half of the population remains unfamiliar with digital or “intelligent” power meters, and the term “smart meter” is virtually unknown. In the Indian context, the introduction of smart meters presents a distinctive opportunity to significantly enhance the electricity landscape. By delving into the role of Smart Meters, this paper underscores the significance of prioritizing load shifting to off-peak hours. This approach enables the utilization of the proposed smart tariff, which aims to reduce costs, mitigate power blackouts, and prevent grid failures during non-peak hours, ultimately enhancing the overall network reliability. In this paper, a new procedure is followed based on Microcontroller STM32F373VBT6 (STMicroelectronics) to detect and control the energy meter from power theft and solve it by remotely disconnect and reconnecting the service (line) of a particular consumer. An SMS will be sent automatically to the utility central server through GSM module Qualcomm 9207 LTE Modem whenever unauthorized activities detected and a separate message will send back to the microcontroller in order to disconnect the unauthorized supply. A unique method is implemented by interspersed the GSM feature into smart meters with Solid state relay to deal with the non-technical losses, billing difficulties, and voltage fluctuation complication.
