Artificial Intelligence Applied in Optimization of Crop Yield for Ensuring Food Security in Nigeria: A Systematic Analysis

Addressing the urgent global challenge of food security is particularly critical in Nigeria, where a burgeoning population and the adverse effects of climate change pose substantial threats to agricultural productivity. The transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in tackling such challenges has become increasingly evident, with a specific focus on food security and crop production. Recent years have witnessed a surge in AI applications within the agricultural sector, leveraging its capabilities to optimize processes, enhance yield predictions, manage resources efficiently, and mitigate climate change impacts on crop production. This article offers a comprehensive review of AI applications in agriculture, concentrating on their role in bolstering food security and elevating crop yields. Various AI applications, including precision farming, crop disease detection, yield forecasting, and supply chain optimization, are explored for their revolutionary impact on agriculture. The integration of AI technologies into the agricultural sector holds immense promise, promising to elevate food security and amplify crop yields significantly. Despite the promising outlook, the adoption of AI in agriculture remains at an early stage, particularly in Nigeria. Challenges such as limited awareness, infrastructure constraints, and a slow pace of AI adoption in the agricultural landscape hinder its widespread implementation. While acknowledging the substantial benefits that AI can bring to agriculture, it is evident that further research is crucial to accelerate the adoption and implementation of AI technologies in Nigeria. This survey underscores the importance of concerted efforts to overcome barriers and fully harness the potential of AI in fortifying food security and elevating crop yields in the Nigerian agricultural context.
