CyReal: A Unified Framework for Continuous Evaluation of Simulations, Emulations, and Real Systems

The development of new network services often involves separate evaluation and implementation stages, leading to inconsistencies and delays. To address these challenges, we propose CyReal, a continuous development framework that integrates simulations, emulations, and real systems into a cohesive testbed environment. CyReal facilitates seamless transitions between different levels of abstraction, enabling comprehensive and consistent evaluation throughout the network lifecycle. To implement CyReal, we developed TENTOU, a middleware system that manages this integrated environment, ensuring efficient resource allocation, unified experiment execution, and seamless integration of user-defined facilities. We validated TENTOU through a wireless emulation case study in a smart office, demonstrating its ability to improve accuracy, reduce costs, and streamline the development process. Validation confirmed that CyReal effectively integrates simulations, emulations, and real systems into a cohesive evaluation environment, offering greater flexibility and depth of analysis than traditional methods. Our validation also indicates that further study is needed to enhance time synchronization and develop more generalized data exchange mechanisms, which are essential for maximizing the effectiveness of CyReal in complex, real-world applications.
