An Approach to Realize the Future Railway Mobile Communication System in the Form of Microservices Architecture

Railway digitalization is driven by the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) standard aimed to provide more sustainable services. FRMCS will support rail innovations to meet the increasing service demands. The FRMCS design applies the layered approach distinguishing transport, services and applications. The FRMCS specifications define the requirements of FRMCS applications and adopt 5G mobile communications to provide the required connectivity. The realization of the service stratum, which will be based on Service Based Architecture, is regarded as a topic for further study. In this paper, an approach to design the FRMCS system in the form of microservice architecture is presented. The presented approach defines the reusable by different FRMCS applications functionality as loosely coupled microservices customized to the mission critical railway requirements. The microservices communicate through RESTful application programming interfaces to constitute the railway applications which provides more flexibility, resiliency, and scalability.
