Achieving engagement of residential electrical energy consumers through real-time feedback: The eeRIS vision

It has become common knowledge over the last years that energy efficiency cannot be achieved without behavioral change in human energy consuming habits. Substantial research has been performed on this field with respect to the behaviors driving the consumption of electrical energy, especially in residential environments. This has also resulted in the development of both hardware and software infrastructure, at research and commercial level, aiming to support residential consumers through the provision of feedback. Within the scope of this work, several common problems will be discussed that have arisen in the respective R&D implementations, hindering further development in the field. The identification of these problems has led to the design of the eeRIS system, which strives to serve as a tool for electrical energy consumers aiming to achieve engagement through feedback. The system functionality and architecture are presented in this work, as well as its position in the respective market.
