A Survey Study About the Impacts of Introducing a Microservices Cataloging Tool in a Large Software Development Unit

Many large companies have recently embraced a microservices-based architecture for their systems. Besides the benefits, this strategy also comes with particular challenges that require careful attention, such as managing a high number of services. Several tools propose to solve this problem through a catalog of services, which has features to categorize and organize them. However, to the best of our knowledge, no work in the literature has investigated the impact of introducing this type of tool, especially when the services are maintained by several teams. In this paper, we conducted a survey study based on UTAUT2 in a large software development unit that recently adopted a service catalog tool, investigating the technology acceptance of such a solution. As a result, the answers showed that the professionals generally considered the tool’s introduction positive, pointing to a higher microservice reuse as one of the benefits. On the other hand, the participants also pointed out that promoting the tool to all developers is important for it to work effectively.
