Open radio access network (O-RAN) has emerged as a key area of research in telecommunications. It offers transformative solutions for network flexibility, cost-efficiency, and vendor-neutral infrastructure. By promoting interoperability and decoupling hardware and software, O-RAN reduces dependency on proprietary systems, fostering competition and lowering network deployment costs. This paradigm shift is particularly advantageous in scaling 5G and beyond, making networks more adaptable to future advancements. Given its critical role in the modernization of mobile networks, understanding the intellectual structure of O-RAN research is essential for guiding technological development and policy-making. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of O-RAN research using publications data, identifying influential contributors, key journals, and collaborative networks. It reveals major research trends and themes through cluster analysis, offering insights into the theoretical and managerial implications of O-RAN, providing a foundation for future research exploration. The findings emphasize the importance of strategic involvement from stakeholders-including researchers, network providers, and policymakers-to fully harness O-RAN’s potential for enhancing network performance, security, and sustainability.
