초록

The sustainability of building materials and infrastructure became a main concern in recent years. The CO2 emissions, energy requirements, durability, natural resource depletion, lack of landfill space and recycling are some of the main issues to be faced. Railways, roadways, bridges, tunnels, supporting walls and pipelines are the main transportation infrastructures that require a special care with respect to the future use of materials, especially cementitious and bituminous compounds. This work addresses the main features related to these materials, that are widely used in the transportation infrastructure and the main issues for the development of more sustainable transportation infrastructures. The durability, the restoration and the recycling are main topics that requires a deep knowledge of materials technology coupled with the environmental conditions and the traffic loads to which the infrastructures are subjected. In this concern, the performance of recycled cement-based and bituminous materials or a combination of both, should not be underestimated. The strength is not always directly correlated with the durability, while the recycling potential must be carefully evaluated with adequate dosages and material designs. In this manner, it is possible to achieve the required properties and reduce the environmental pollutions. Planning, construction, maintenance and restoration or replacement of infrastructures may be chosen accordingly.
