Secure data dissemination and routing in Internet of Things

In recent years, the widespread adoption of Internet of Things applications has significantly enhanced user experiences, productivity, and security services. However, this surge in adoption has strained existing networks, especially comparison to traditional applications. In this work, we introduced a novel distributed architecture that combines a variation of Proxy Re-Encryption and a Peer-to-Peer gateway network with the reducing the computational burden on power constrained Internet of Things devices. The proposed architecture mitigates the multiple encryptions on these resource constrained Internet of Things devices by assigning this task to the destination gateway without compromising data confidentiality and integrity in routing environment. The proposed algorithm incorporates a Time-Limited Hybrid Proxy Re-encryption scheme. This scheme leverages time-limited tags to specify the validity of reusable ciphertext blocks. This design choice result in faster encryption and decryption times compared to traditional asymmetric algorithms. Furthermore, our proposed approach allows blocks of ciphertext to be shared seamlessly across a Peer-to-Peer gateway network that eliminating the need for multiple encryptions of the same message. This innovative technique effectively alleviates the multiple encryption burdens on energy constrained IoT source nodes and optimizes data dissemination for secure routing in Peer-to-Peer networks. The simulation results of the proposed work that unequivocally demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in reducing latency, network traffic, energy consumption, as well as encryption and decryption times.
