In recent years, Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies have undergone significant paced developments to turn into multitude of domains. Their potency across diverse applications has been accentuated, imputed to their capacity for granting transparency, redundancy, and accountability. These attributes are set up through the utilization of public-key cryptography and hash functions. Notwithstanding, the recent advances in QC have fore-warned actualization of impending threats modeled by the likes of Grover's and Peter Shor's algorithms. If these algorithms are realized, it can lead into breaking blockchains with ease which bank absolutely on traditional cryptographic mathematics. This deems the emergent need to understand and focus on concepts like post-quantum, quantum-proof, quantum-safe, or quantum-resistant crypto-systems. This paper undertakes an examination of current progresses in post-quantum cryptosystems, exploring their applicability within the domain of blockchains and distributed ledger technologies. Additionally, it delves into progresses of notable post-quantum blockchain systems and the primary hurdles they encounter. In essence, this work aims to render prospective blockchain researchers and developers with an expansive perspective and practical metrics concerning the security aspects of post-quantum blockchains.
