A survey on IoT security: challenges and their solutions using machine learning and blockchain technology

The Internet of Things (IoT) has enhanced people’s quality of life across various fields, including healthcare, agriculture, automotive, and education. However, ensuring the security of IoT systems is crucial due to their diverse operating methods and the heterogeneous nature of IoT environments. To effectively address security vulnerabilities in IoT applications, developers and companies must engage in discussions about existing and future solutions for IoT security risks. This paper comprehensively analyses the security concerns, limitations, and requirements associated with IoT. It utilizes a taxonomy to define security requirements for each layer of the three-layer IoT architecture. By categorizing IoT security issues and solutions based on a layered approach, readers can implement best practices and prevent existing security threats at each layer. It is essential to recognize that IoT security vulnerabilities can lead to breaches in data privacy. Consequently, blockchain technology has the potential to address these challenges. This review examines the security issues that compromise IoT systems and explores blockchain-based solutions, consensus protocols, and prospective areas for future research.
