Formation and Development of Image Analysis and Pattern Recognition in the USSR, the Republic of Belarus, and the Russian Federation

Preface to the Special Issue of the journal PRIA “Leading Scientific Schools in Image Analysis, Pattern Recognition, and Related Problems of Computer Science in the USSR, the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation.” The main scientific schools, their scientific leaders, and basic organizations are presented. The most important results obtained by these scientific schools are discussed. A historical and analytical review of the activities of scientific schools is given. The topics and main directions of fundamental and applied research in image analysis and pattern recognition are considered. Tools and methods for coordinating and supporting the development of domestic image analysis and pattern recognition (international scientific cooperation, conferences, publications) are listed, analyzed, and discussed. Current problems, the state of the art, and breakthrough directions in the development of mathematical theories of image analysis and pattern recognition are identified.
