Social Robots in Primary Schools: An Explorative Security Analysis

In recent years, primary school children in the Netherlands have undergone digital education due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a learning deficit among many children. This shift to online education prompted primary schools to adapt their teaching methods, some of them applying social robots to catch up learning deficits. Recognizing the potential safety and privacy issues associated with using social robots in elementary school classrooms, this study focuses on evaluating the software security of two commonly used social robots and determining the necessary safety measures for the network infrastructure in Dutch primary schools. The research methodology involves conducting semi-structured interviews and vulnerability detection workshops. The findings emphasize the significance of security awareness and training regarding security and privacy as most errors are due to human negligence. Regularly updating software related to social robots to maintain adequate security is an important factor. Additionally, the study highlights the benefits and convenience of utilizing cloud environments for administrative and security purposes. To ensure the safe implementation of this innovative technology in (primary) education, further investigation is required to develop a comprehensive security and privacy framework specifically tailored to social robots.
