Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an essential component in digital evidence triage as a powerful solution that has improved the efficiency of forensic examination. This paper aims to provide a synthesis of recent advancements in the application of AI to digital forensics, based on a review of selected papers from the last decade. It examines the current state-of-the-art methods for using machine learning models, particularly deep learning and hybrid models, in the sorting and examination of evidence. The findings reveal that AI plays a crucial role in addressing challenges such as data complexity, scalability, and anti-forensic countermeasures. However, several challenges remain, including limited datasets, legal issues, and constraints in computational power. This paper emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, the emergence of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), and the need for a common framework to deal with current and future technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and quantum computing in digital forensics. Based on the analysis of current research, this work provides a basis for the development of effective AI-based forensic processes and to cope with the complex nature of contemporary cyber investigations.
