Consideration and Practice of Coordinated Management of Access and Fiber in Premises Networks

As a prospective solution for fiber in premises networks (FIN), the fiber-to-the-room (FTTR) replaces the network cable with the optical fiber, achieving an end-to-end experience of the gigabit optical network. The FTTR is the extension of the passive optical network (PON), directly accessing to the user's room, so the management of network also needs to be simultaneously extended. Considering of this, extented OMCI (eOMCI) is proposed to realize the operations, administration and maintenance (OAM) in optical layer and achieve coordinated management of PON and FTTR. In this article, we analyses the necessity of the optical layer OAM from two aspects: service and remote management requirements. Besides, the architecture and field experimental results of eOMCI for PON+FTTR are demonstrated, proving the feasibility of this scheme. With the development of relevant technologies, the realization of optical layer OAM in this article could be regarded as a reference for further study and corresponding standardization, which could promote the evolution of FTTx to support experience guaranteed experience oriented new gigabit service from PON to FTTR.
