Designing a network topology with low energy consumption, minimal delay, and an extended network lifetime became an extensive challenge for underwater acoustic communication. However, it is necessary to design network placement, cluster selection, and routing to extend the network lifetime by reducing energy consumption. This work proposes a three dimensional distributed energy efficient clustering (3D- DEEC) algorithm for optimizing energy efficiency and prolonging network life through clustering techniques. The proposed algorithm considers multiple factors, such as cluster head (CH) selection, distance between the base station and each sensor node, total transmitting energy, residual energy of each node, and time delay. Compared with existing clustering schemes, the proposed design witnessed an increment in the efficiency of the network and prolongs the network lifetime. It improves network integrity with an optimum packet delivery ratio, minimizes energy consumption, and enhances the network coverage area. The proposed algorithm is designed to achieve an optimum three-dimensional clustering scheme for the underwater acoustic wireless sensor network(UAWSN) regarding energy efficiency in hostile underwater acoustic environments. This study reveals that the 3D- DEEC clustering algorithm can obtain low energy consumption at each node and a high packet delivery ratio in the network.
