The given paper introduces an ensemble approach named Fuzzy-Ant Colony Clustering Energy Efficient Routing Protocol (FACERP) to enhance the energy efficiency of the UWSNs (underwater wireless sensor networks). In FACERP, fuzzy logic approach is applied to estimate the CH (cluster head) taking into consideration the contacts made with the sensor node, energy level and the communication link. To find the optimal solution path for data transmission, Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is then utilized. The proposed methodology is tested using NS2 simulator and analysis of the results proved that, FACERP outperforms the existing methods such as FCM (fuzzy c-means), MFO (metaheuristic firefly optimization), EC-PCO (energy centre position control optimization) and GWO (grey wolf optimization) with 4% higher PDR (packet delivery ratio) and 3% less energy consumption. Lastly, FACERP consumes the lowest energy (1.56 J) and dependability on overall network performance of UWSNs thus surpassing existing recent studies in terms of performance.
