Software Defined Networking (SDN) is growing as the next generation network technology. The separate control and data planes in SDN allow the advent of new features. Centralized flow management and network programmability encourages improved network functions by improving flexibility, scalability, visibility, and cost-effectiveness. While SDN evolution is a crucial enabler for implementations in varied networking situations, like data centers and ISPs in multiple domains, the concept still needs to be considered for more security and reliability with little dependability to data, hence avoiding its agile nature adoption. Recently, this field has drawn the attention of the research community for exploring SDN security and addressing the gaps seen in adopting SDN. Since the idea of SDNs is in the developing stage and there are many loopholes in the security architecture of the SDN, many attacks may take advantage of the vulnerabilities and configuration issues in its elements. This paper attempts to cover the salient features of the SDN architecture and its primary components. It also sheds some light on the security issues such networks face and the main threats they can encounter. Some remedies taken for countering the threats and attacks are also mentioned. Finally, the unexplored and challenging SDN areas are highlighted to attract future research work.
