Manufacturing companies are currently facing the production of complex and individualized products in a changing market environment. To address this situation, it is necessary to improve communication among the parties involved in the various phases of the product lifecycle such as engineering, production, and operation. In this aspect, the concept of the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) represents an innovative solution by providing standardized structures and interfaces for the representation and exchange of information and services among the involved parties. However, the implementation of AAS in manufacturing companies is hindered by the lack of a clear process model for identifying which assets are relevant and necessary to represent in the AAS structure for optimal use. Therefore, in this paper, we offer a five-step process model to identify not only the relevant assets but also their relations along the value chain. Additionally, based on a real-world scenario of collaborating companies in the development and production of an automotive product, we demonstrate the potential use of AAS to benefit the transfer of information among all involved companies throughout the product lifecycle.
