In general, a Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) utilizes various wireless communication technologies to enable communication between vehicles and infrastructure. Each technology has its own unique characteristics and structures. Through intense competition aimed at enhancing VANET technology, subsequent technologies have been observed to become more efficient than their predecessors. This comprehensive review assesses the integration of Wi-Fi, VLC, WiMAX, 4G, and 5G technologies in VANETs. It examines studies evaluating the performance of both short-range and long-range technologies integred in VANET. The analysis in the review identifies 5G as the most suitable network for VANET applications due to its ultra-low latency, high data rates, and extensive device connectivity. 5G is particularly well-suited for autonomous driving, intelligent traffic management, and real-time communication between vehicles and infrastructure. Its improved network capacity and robustness ensure reliable data transmission in VANET environments. The review also discusses challenges and security considerations, providing valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers to make informed decisions regarding efficient VANET deployments.
