Network neutrality (net neutrality) is the idea that all information on the Internet should be treated equally. It is an essential component to the Internet. The repeal of net neutrality, the philosophy of equal treatment of all data on the web by Internet Service Providers (ISPs), was met with much disappointment, and the fight for net neutrality has been a long battle. With its recent restoration, and in a world with an increasing use of technology, cyber laws are relevant now more than ever. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was in charge of getting rid of net neutrality in the first place, and also reinstating it as of recent. The fairness of net neutrality is ensuring ISPs are not bought out is essential because it promotes the success of small businesses and access to information for all. COVID-19 gave a taste of the Internet with and without net neutrality. The historical context with Ajit Pai’s hand in the fight is necessary to highlight. The history of the fight for and against net neutrality gives a taste of the ever-changing landscape of the Internet and how network slicing, discrimination, and regulations play into each other.
