Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) play a critical role in enabling safer and more efficient transportation systems. However, the dynamic nature of vehicular movement and rapidly changing network conditions often lead to frequent link disconnections, which pose significant challenges to the reliability and performance of VANET applications. In this research, a comparison of link prediction protocols for frequent link disconnections in VANETs is presented. The primary objective of this comparison is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of various link prediction protocols in mitigating the adverse effects of frequent link disconnections in VANETs. In this comparison, the landscape of existing protocols, including those based on statistical analysis, machine learning, and hybrid approaches, to identify their strengths and weaknesses is analyzed. Through an extensive series of simulations and experiments in a realistic VANET environment, the performance of these protocols in terms of “delay, packet delivery ratio and throughput” is analyzed. The findings of this research provide valuable insights for network designers and VANET application developers in selecting the most suitable link prediction protocols for their specific use cases.
