Synchronizing Devices Using Asset Administration Shells

Flexible production systems are characterized by the fact, that they can be reconfigured at ever shorter intervals in order to respond to changing production processes in a time and cost-minimizing manner. Reconfiguring the existing system architecture consisting of process control systems and industrial controllers here referred to as Programmable Logical Controllers (PLCs), which communicate with each other via proprietary bus systems, requires considerable engineering efforts both at the field level of the PLC and at the control level. Therefore, this article shows a method of synchronizing PLCs with corresponding Asset Administration Shells (AASs), in which changing data within the PLC is automatically updated in the connected AAS using the Packaging Machine Language (PackML) standard to synchronize the processes. To use AAS in a production environment, infrastructure is needed, which is provided by the Open Source Eclipse BaSyx Framework. Therefore, this paper gives a brief insight into the required infrastructure components of the framework and ends with the presentation of a responsive Web GUI that can be used to monitor and control devices and plant segment.
