Seamless Transition: Upgrading Communication Networks from PSTN to Wireless Technology with a Budget-Friendly Approach

The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), a technology that has been in use since the 1920s, was primarily designed to establish voice communication between users through manual or electronic switching mechanisms. However, with the increasing demand for high-capacity data transmission and the exponential growth in the number of users, PSTN's limitations have become apparent. Its inability to accommodate high bandwidth data and a large number of users necessitates a migration to more advanced technology.This paper discusses the transition from PSTN to next-generation wireless data communication networks. The proposed solution involves the use of 5G wireless networks, which are capable of high-speed data transmission. The network infrastructure includes Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) connected via optical fibers, which offer significantly higher bandwidth than traditional copper wires used in PSTN. This setup allows for the creation of a cellular structure for wireless communication, with each cell serving a hexagonal area.The paper also presents a financial analysis of the capital and operational expenditures required to implement this transformation across Bangladesh. The analysis takes into account the costs associated with setting up the wireless network infrastructure, including the BTS and optical fibers, as well as ongoing operational costs.In conclusion, this paper argues that despite the significant investment required, the migration from PSTN to wireless communication is not only necessary but also inevitable to meet the growing demands of modern communication.
