LDA-Based Signal Detection Method for Underwater Optical Wireless Communication System With PMT Receiver

To address the issues in existing signal detection methods, this work proposes a linear discriminant analysis (LDA)-based signal detection method for underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system with photo-multiplier tube (PMT) receiver. The proposed method adopts LDA to acquire the optimal projection vector for the combination of received signal samples. To further reduce the computational complexity, simplification is performed in the calculation of the projection vector based on the correlation analysis of PMT output samples. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method yields better bit error rate (BER) performance than the benchmark methods. Specifically, the proposed method achieves an optical power gain of at least 2 dB over the benchmark methods at the BER of 10–3 with 4-time sampling under dynamic channel.
