Enhancing performance of in-vehicle network protocols for intelligent transportation

With the advancement of automotive industry, the number of sensors, electronic control units (ECUs), and actuators within the vehicle has increased. These ECUs need to communicate with each other and other system components within the vehicle to ensure efficient vehicle operation. For this, bus-based networks with appropriate network protocols are used. This paper presents an intra vehicular network in which the communication protocols, Controller Area Network (CAN) and Local Interconnect Network (LIN) are used to communicate the frames over the shared bus. The performance of CAN and LIN is evaluated for network delay and throughput. It is observed that CAN outperforms LIN achieving maximum throughput of 119 Kbps for payload data size of 8 bytes. Also, the delay in sending a frame from CAN to LIN node improves by 10.24% over the counterpart LIN to CAN node.
