Is Gen AI a professor in creativity? A case study in postgraduate students

연구 분야: Artificial Intelligence

학회: Education and Information Technologies

초록

Recent advances in generative artificial intelligence have substantially influenced educational practices, including those at the postgraduate level. This study explores whether and how generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) improves postgraduates’ creativity in research projects. Qualitative analysis of interviews with 12 participants from various disciplines shows mixed views on Gen AI’s effectiveness in creativity. While some students find Gen AI useful for initial data processing and generating preliminary insights, others feel it lacks in facilitating deep, creative thinking required to identify novel research gaps. Gen AI seems role as a collaborative tool that enhances the creative process. Students use Gen AI to generate initial insights, which are then critically refined through discussions with peers and advisors. However, Gen AI is not a professor in creativity for postgraduates’ research, but it can serve as a tool to stimulate creativity. Meanwhile, postgraduates have diverse views on the impact of generative AI on academic innovation, which span academic practices, social and ethical considerations, and systemic and operational challenges. The research process is supported by five key stages with Gen AI: idea generation, idea execution, idea refinement, idea implementation, and feedback provision. The findings suggest the importance of a balanced approach to integrating AI in educational settings, where it complements rather than supplants established research techniques.
