Five years of changes in the accessibility, usability, and security of Hungarian government websites

Thanks to the proliferation of the Internet, an increasing number of services of Hungarian public sector bodies have become available online since the mid-2000 s. Currently, citizens can handle over 4,600 public administrative matters electronically, which makes it extremely important that the accessibility, usability, and security of government websites are as good as possible. In our previous research, we developed a website evaluation method to assess these factors. Using this method, 25 Hungarian public sector websites were examined to determine their compliance with WCAG guidelines and evaluate their performance in terms of usability and security. In the current study, the evaluation method has been improved and then the same websites were reassessed, making it possible to compare the results with those obtained five years earlier. Several recommendations have been made to address the main issues, aiming to assist website developers and content creators.
