It primarily follows the heroic Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, and the villainous Decepticons, led by Optimus' arch-enemy Megatron. The Autobots and Decepticons comprise the two alien robot factions at war that can "transform" into other forms, such as vehicles and animals. The franchise encompasses toys, animation, comic books, video games and films. As of 2011, it generated more than ¥2 trillion in revenue, making it one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. Theatrically-released Transformers films, including the live-action film series, make up the 15th-highest-grossing film series, with a total of $5.42 billion grossed over nine films to date; two films, Dark of the Moon (2011) and Age of Extinction (2014) both crossed the $1 billion threshold, with the latter becoming the highest-grossing film of 2014. Ownership of the franchise is currently split between Hasbro and Tomy, though both companies are credited in modern toy releases.
